Name:Hydnum repandum. Hedgehog.
Family:Hydnaceae.
Spore Color:White.
Size, Smell, Taste:4 to 12 cm across. Odor, indistinct to fruity. Taste, mild to sweet at first, becoming slightly acrid.
Niche (substrate): Solitary or scattered in troops, clumps, arcs, or lage fairy rings in coniferous woodlands, occasionally with Tanoak. Most abundent under coastal pines and in Sitka spruce on the Far North Coast. Fruiting from early fall through winter or spring in wet years. Slow growing; a single fruitbody can last for months, becoming larger and more irregular as season goes on.
Edibility: Edible and good. Flavor similar to Chanterelles. Acrid taste goes away with cooking.
Distinguishing features: Creamy cap, thick white ocher-staining flesh, fragile spines on underside of cap.
