Name:Hydnum umbilicatum. Bellybutton Hedgehog.

Size, Smell, Taste:2 to 5 cm across. Odor, indistinct to fruity. Taste, mild to sweet.
Niche (substrate): Solitary or more often scattered in large troops on ground in duff, or on or near well-decayed logs and stumps in mixed woodlands. Generally in pine or Tanoak woods with a Huckleberry understory. Fruiting in winter or early spring.
Edibility:Edible and good.
Distinguishing features: A staple winter edible of the North Coast. Often fruits alongside Craterellus tubaeformis. Hydnum repandum lacks the bellybutton, otherwise similar to the Hedgehog but smaller.
