Name:Lactarius Rubidus. Candy Cap.
Family:Russulaceae.
Spore Color:White to pale cream.
Size, Smell, Taste:cap 15 to 80 mm across. Stipe 2 to 10 cm. Odor pleasant but difficult to describe with people disagreeing on the details. I know what it smells like to me. :-)  Taste mild
Niche (substrate):Solitary, in small groups or clusters on the ground, or on well decayed stumps and logs in a wide range of forest types. Most abundantly fruiting with live oaks and pines, also found with Tanoak and Douglas Fir. Fruiting late fall through spring, peaking in early winter.
Edibility:A treat. Used for flavoring. Best after a gentle drying.
Distinguishing features:Dry, warm-orange, wrinkled-roughened cap, with often scaloped or ruffley margins. Water-white latex, hollow stipe, sweet, fenugreek odor. The odor of a fresh mushroom differs from the odor after drying.
