Niche (substrate): | Solitary or in small groups, in a variety of habitats. Very common in early fall under Sitka Spruce in the northern part of our range, then with pine and oak in early fall through midwinter and occasional spring fruitings farther south. |
Edibility: | Edible but not recommended, easily confused with A. gemmata and A. pantherina, at least by me. |
Distinguishing features: | Cap color dark brown to bright yellow. Creamy gills, skirtlike partial veil, yellowish U. veil remnants, reddish staining at the stipe. |
